I apologize for not posting on the Wall for the longest time, but yes, I'm still alive (just been busy with Themify). Today I have an awesome post to share — 30 great interactive sites. HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript have opened up many design possibilities. Web design nowadays is very interactive, it is no longer limited by static layouts. The 30 sites listed below demonstrate great examples of interactive web design. It ranges from simple transition effect to cool parallax scrolling to rich media presentation such as music audio and videos. Enjoy!

Bienville Capital Management

The Bienville Capital Management site offers seamless transition between pages. Try to click around the site and you will notice there is no redirection when navigating to different pages. The page transits smoothly with fading and sliding animation

Tool of North America

At the first glance, the Tool of North America site looks like a Flash site, but it is actually all done with Javascript, HTML5 and CSS3. The animation is super slick. The only downside is the content is not indexable by search engines because it is pulled with Ajax (not SEO friendly at all). If you disable Javascript, you will get a blank page. Despite the SEO and accessibilty issue, the interaction is amazing. Don't forget to check out the site on mobile; it is also nicely done.

Whiteboard

The background's blurry effect is particularly stunning on the Whiteboard site. To see it yourself: narrow your browser to mobile breakpoint or check it on a mobile device and click on the menu icon, the background will be transformed with the blur effect.

Cyclemon

Simply beautiful illustrations presented with parallax scrolling! Check out the Parallax theme if you like parallax scrolling effect.

Mahedine Yahia

The main background animation on Mahedine's site consists of 191 images (each image is about 56kb file size, 470 x 264px). It produces frame-by-frame animation effect as you scroll.

Life of Pi

The Life of Pi jorney site has taken parallax scrolling and frame-by-frame animation to another level. If you like the movie, you will definitely enjoy scrolling on their site. It shows you behind the scene materials in frame-by-frame animation as you scroll. The result is breath-taking with just over 100 images with heavy Javascript and CSS3 work.

Teehan+Lax

Each story (post) on Teehan+Lax is beautifully crafted with great attention to details. The content is presented with beautiful typesetting and subtle animation effects (eg. check these two posts). In case you are not aware of this minor UX detail: when you are at the middle of the page, notice the top nav bar slides down when you scroll up and it slides up again when you scroll down. The logic makes perfect sense. When you scroll down, you probably want to continue to read, so you don't want the nav bar to obstruct your reading area. When you scroll up, the nav bar appears in case you want to jump to another page.

Coffee Surfing illy

The page transition on Coffee Surfing illy site is not as seamless as the Bienville Capital Management site as mentioned above, but the half page scrolling is interesting. When you scroll, the page is divided in half and scroll in opposite direction.

Satorisan

Satorisan has a very nice shop design. The shop main page allows you to view all products in a scrollable/draggable horizontal list. Clicking on any product will transit to the product detail page with parallax scrolling effect.

Wink TTD

Wink did an awesome job on their responsive and interactive website. Whether you are viewing the site on a large iMac screen or a tiny iPhone display, the design and animation is very consistent.

Solasie

From design to interaction, the Solasie site is two thumbs up. It was pleasant browsing on the site to enjoy the rich media content (gallery images, music, and videos). The only problem is the SEO and accessibilty issue. The content is not indexable and the page URLs can not be shared because the pages are queried with Ajax. This is a common problem with sites relying on Ajax to display the content, but they often provide anchor tags in the URL bar for sharing pages.

REI 1440 Project

The timeline presentation on the REI 1440 site is very suitable for their concept, "minute-by-minute" timeline making up a 24-hour period. You can use the arrow keys to navigate through the timeline which saves time from moving your mouse and clicking. Try out their clock time selector — from design concept to technical execution, all were done excellently!

Sketchin

The text masking on the navigation menu is a nice touch to the site.

Anonymous

Anonymous agency not only makes good design, but they present their portfolio well. The portfolio images were masked with silhouette of faces — very cute! The portfolio expander might seem like it is pulled with Ajax, but they are actually separate pages. Also, notice the tiny detail of the year bubble tooltip as you scroll through the portfolio items?

Beatbox Academy

The Beatbox Academy lets you create drum beats by hitting certain keys on your keyboard. It doen't really serve any other purposes (you can not save or export the beats), but it is fun. The parallax scrolling on the site is nicely done though.

Quartz

Quartz puts the center focus on the content. Unlike most news/editorial sites where they force you to click on the article to read full story, Quartz displays all articles with full content on one page. As you scroll through the articles, the address bar automatically updates the URL (good for sharing articles). Their mobile breakpoint provides the same browsing experience as on the desktop.

Chrysler: Test of Ownership

Chrysler's Test of Ownership site is another good example of page transition. The page layout/content transits nicely when switching different pages. Not to mention the beautiful animation on the Proof page. Scrolling down will animate the numbers, charts, and bars. Scrolling up will reverse the animation. Simple, but cool.

As you scroll on the Tinke site, it shows you a complete walk-through of the product, all in action! Unfortunately, it is not responsive.

Minimal Monkey is a simple site by Stephen Burgess which offers great user experience. The layout, page transition, and navigation are very well thought-out on all responsive breakpoints.

Athenos is a lovely site with a lot of design details and transition effects. It has also proven that modern sites are heavy on page load. Just this animated GIF file on the site is 2.5mb. Beauty does come with file size!

Business cards used to be nothing more than plain and simple (and quite frankly, boring) pieces of card with a few contact details on. That was before creatives got involved, though, and completely changed the game. People started to realise the fantastic branding potential behind these little cards. We’ve already seen a number of beautiful examples of embossed business cards, and even some so creative that they change the shape and material of the traditional business card entirely. Well, the latter has proved to be incredibly popular in recent years, and we’ve found even more examples of brands using business cards to mirror their personalities! Today we have a guest post by Andy Walpolesharing his experience from creating theLightbox Ultra on Mozilla Demo Studio. Several years ago developer Lokesh Dhakar created the familiar Lightbox script with Prototype and script.aculo.us. It's smooth animation and sleek aesthetics were an instant hit in the web design community and it was used on a multitude of different projects.
Demos
There have been many imitations - Fancybox and Thickbox to name just two - but Lightbox still remains as the favoured way to present images to a user. This, primarily, is due to its 3d animation and background dimming which allows the user to view the image without any distraction. It's a useful, timeless technique.
Since CSS animation first started to be used a few years ago, coders have enjoyed creating their own CSS-only Lightbox versions. Indeed, there is a real craze for CSS-only animation experimentation. This is something we should all welcome. In the near future CSS will completely take over from JavaScript on the presentation layer so using it now for this purpose is perceptive forward thinking.
Just recently I had a CSS project exhibited on the Mozilla Demo site called Lightbox Ultra. Its core is CSS3 - in particular 3d animation - but in the process of creating the demo I realised that JavaScript added important usability and design features.
This guide is not a line-by-line explanation of the code I have written for my Lightbox project. Going into such tiny detail will only confuse the reader. Instead, I'll explain some of the key concepts behind creating a modern take on the popular Lightbox script. That way you can then use these ideas in your own coding projects.

CSS and Lightbox

Firstly, the HTML is as below:

I used definition lists but I could have as easily used unordered lists. Note how the HTML code block for each image is split into two different parts - one for the thumbnail and the other for the full sized image.
The full-sized image needs to be set to "display: none" so that the initial state for the viewer is one where only the thumbnail is visible:

The Lightbox approach is for the full-sized image to appear after user interaction with the thumbnail.
This is possible with JavaScript events. The small code block below changes the CSS to "display:block" when the user clicks on the thumbnail (Here I use the querySelector() method which only has partial cross-browser support):

The closest we have to JavaScript events in CSS is the :target pseudo-class. I don't know whose idea it was to introduce :target into the CSS3 spec, but its inclusion was a minor act of ingenuity.
Instead of a script event like above it is possible to use the following CSS:

:target works by using a fragment in the URL. The link in the thumbnail has the following fragment: "#block-1". The ID for the full size image is block-1. Clicking on the link with the fragment then triggers the HTML with an ID that is exactly the same as long, of course, as you specify this in your style sheet.
Because it is so different to other CSS, :target may appear a little confusing at first. The best method to become familiar with it is by rolling your sleeves up and experimenting with this pseudo-class on your own code.
:target will become one of the most used CSS3 features in the future. The reason it has only had limited use so far is that it is not supported in Internet Explorer versions 8 and below. I'll discuss workarounds in the next section.
The actual CSS keyframe animation is fairly straightforward:

I will not explain the code above in detail because this article isn't a tutorial on CSS3 animation. For that I would advise you to read introductions written by Tim Van DammeLouis Lazaris and Tom Waterhouse.
Note in the code above I used Webkit, Firefox, Microsoft and Opera prefixes. As of yet there is no keyframe support in Internet Explorer or Opera but it will be coming soon so it's best to future-proof your code.

JavaScript and Lightbox

On my Mozilla Demo page I had a lot of fun creating a modern take of Lightbox with CSS3. I used box-shadows, the calc() function, gradients and CSS3 transforms. If you turn off JavaScript in your browser and try the demo out in a modern non-IE browser you will see it is in perfect working order.
However, there are are number of pitfalls with a CSS-only approach.
Firstly, CSS3 animation only fires once. This is an issue previously well documented byOli Studholme and Chris Coyier.
CSS3 keyframes animation will only work again if the page is refreshed. One way around is to use transitions instead of keyframes. Another way is to use JavaScript to rebuild the node every time the animation is fired.
In the change_animation() method I remove the old class, clone the relevant part of the DOM, randomly add a new class, delete the online node and replace it with the DOM clone:

The second issue facing a CSS3 Lightbox is the lack of support in Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, versions 8 and below do not recognise the :target pseudo-class.
One way around this is to use a polyfill such as Dean Edwards IE7.js or Keith Clarke's Selectivizr (the latter has support for IE8 only).
As the Sizzle engine has full CSS3 support I presume as well that you can use jQuery or Dojo.
However, my aim for my demo was to create it fully independent of any other JavaScript library. This is a tough call.
If a browser does not recognise a CSS pseudo-class or pseudo-element it will parse out the entire block of code. That means it is not possible to change the CSS using thestyleSheets object because the CSS block using :target is not there to alter.
My solution was to use the XMLHttpRequest API to save the stylesheets to memory, change :target to a class called ieTarget, remove the old style sheets and then add the new altered CSS to the head. The ieTarget is then dynamically added and removed from the HTML depending on a click event being fired on the thumbnail or full-size close link.
Admittedly, it is quite a drastic move and one that leaves open all sorts of potential bugs and issues.
Lastly, if you are going to use JavaScript for Lightbox then why not use the new Full-screen API. This was introduced into Webkit in 2011 and made its first appearance in Firefox at the beginning of 2012.
The API is relatively straightforward to implement. I did so in the following function:

Conclusion

You may well wonder if there is a need for a JavaScript fullback for a CSS-based Lightbox, then why not just a use a wholly JavaScript approach and cut out the CSS animation? That, of course, is your pejorative. But let us put the sign up for everybody to read: animation for web design will soon be exclusively done by CSS, not JavaScript. In anticipation of this it makes sense to familiarise yourself with CSS animation now.
Using JavaScript too also means you can gain access to some of the funky new APIs like Full-screen.
If you do use CSS 3d animation then do so with caution. I think it is important to use it subtly rather than creating some garish 360 plus flipping and twisting. To do so would put the animation at the centre of attention rather than the images that are being presented.
